You must install the supported version of OpenJDK Java Development Kit (JDK) before installing . The Insight Server requires the JAVA_HOME environment variable to be set to the installation directory for the Java package that you install.

This page refers specifically to a JDK installation on a Windows system. If you are installing on Unix you will need to adjust some of the specifics accordingly.

  1. Download the supported version of Java JDK. There are several vendors who source the supported JDK version as OpenJDK. Here are two suggested resources: 
    1. Oracle OpenJDK
    2. Adopt OpenJDK
      For more information about selecting an OpenJDK vendor click here. 
  2. Download the supported JDK version.
  3. When the download has finished, extract the zip file into a folder, e.g. C:\Program Files\Java\ and it will create a jdk-11 folder (where the bin folder is a direct sub-folder). You may need Administrator privileges to extract the zip file to this location.

  4. Select Control Panel and then System.

  5. Set a PATH:

    1. Click Advanced and then Environment Variables.
    2. Add the location of the bin folder of the JDK installation to the PATH variable in System Variables.
    3. The following is a typical value for the PATH variable: C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;"C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-11\bin"

  6. Select Control Panel and then System.

  7. Set JAVA_HOME:

    1. Enter the variable name as JAVA_HOME.
    2. Enter the variable value as the installation path of the JDK (without the bin sub-folder).
    3. Click OK.
    4. Click Apply Changes
  8. To see if it worked, open up the Command Prompt and type java -version and see if it prints your newly installed JDK.

Check that you have replaced the Path and JAVA_HOME environment variables from any prior versions of Java with values that point to the new version. You may need to uninstall the prior Java version and restart your server.
