Java Runtime Environment

Info

This page refers specifically to a JDK or JRE installation on a Windows system. If you are installing on Unix you will need to adjust some of the specifics accordingly.

If you are not sure whether you have Oracle's JDK or JRE installed correctly, please confirm by doing the following:

  1. Run a complete directory search (using the 'All File and Folders' option if available) on your drives for the occurrence of 'jdk' in the filename.
  2. To confirm correct JRE installation , run a complete directory search (using the 'All File and Folders' option if available) on your drives for the occurrence of  'jre' in the filename.
    1. If your results retrieve a folder with the name 'jdk' immediately followed by a series of version numbers (for example, jdk1.5.0_06), then your Sun Oracle JDK has been installed. You should double-check the contents of this folder to ensure that the installation files are intact. If you are unsure about this, proceed to step 3 to re-install the Sun Oracle JDK. Otherwise, proceed to step 3 3d to check that your JAVA_HOME environment variable has been set correctly.
    2. If your results retrieve a folder with the name 'jre' immediately followed by a version number (for example, jre6), then your Sun Oracle JRE has been installed. You should double-check the contents of this folder to ensure that the installation files are intact. If you are unsure about this, proceed to step 4 to re-install the Sun Oracle JRE. Otherwise, proceed to step 4 4d to check that your JRE_HOME environment variable has been set correctly.
    3. If you do not retrieve results as explained above, then it is highly likely that your Sun Oracle JDK or JRE has not been installed.

Locate the JDK or JRE Installation Directory

If you already know the installation path for the Java or Software Development Kit, go to Step 2 below. Otherwise, find the installation path by following these instructions:

  1. Unless you changed the installation path for the Java Development Kit or the Java Runtime Environment during installation, it will be in a directory under C:\Program Files\Java for a 32 bit architecture and under c:\Program Files (x64) for a 64 bit Windows system. Using Explorer, open the directory C:\Program Files or Program Files (x64) \Java.
  2. Inside that path will be one or more subdirectories such as jdk1.5.0_08. If you have just installed the Java Development Kit, it will be installed to the newest directory, which you can find by sorting by date. For example, it may be installed in C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_08. This is the installation path.
  3. An example of an installation path for the JRE on a 64 bit windows system would be c:\Program Files(x64)\java\jre6

Set the JAVA_HOME or JRE_HOME Environment Variable

Once you have identified the JDK installation path:

  1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop and select 'Properties'.
  2. Click the 'Advanced' tab.
  3. Click the 'Environment Variables' button.
  4. Under 'System Variables', click 'New'.
  5. Enter the variable name as JAVA_HOME or JRE_HOME.
  6. Enter the variable value as the installation path for the Java Development Kit or the Java Runtime Environment.
  7. Click 'OK'.
  8. Click 'Apply Changes'.
